When a man is born, his soul bears the deeds of his past births (good and bad deeds). Thus, his soul is loaded with different kinds of deeds at the time of his birth on the earth. If a soul has done only good and kind deeds in it's past births, then the soul will derive benefits or good results out of life on this earth. On the other hand, if the soul has done evil deeds in the past births, the soul will derive bad results (miseries) out of life. Therefore the soul is responsible for the miseries and happiness it experiences in this birth. Therefore the motive of an ideal soul should be to avoid doing bad deeds and do good deeds. It is said that the material world is merely an illusion, so much so that the secrets of the previous births are hidden away from him. (Man)
Therefore, a man is unable to find out the reason for the miseries and happiness he experiences in life. The soul, which understands the true secrets of his birth and leads a virtuous life, following the path of righteousness in his lifetime, will certainly derive all the benefits. The saying goes "As you sow, so you reap". According to that saying, we can reap a good harvest only if we have sown good deeds. The harvest depends on the quality of the seeds sown on land. According to the law of nature, with the deeds of our past births as the basis the Almighty God rules the world. "Every action has an equal and opposite reaction" is truth. If we think of doing good deeds and put them into practice in our daily lives we can derive all the benefits out of life. Three great paths had been prescribed for Atonement of sin.
SHANTHI REMEDIES-FIRST PATH
According to the first path we should find out from treatise (Nadi Astrology) the miseries in our life, and as a re-compensation for our evil deeds, we should do a direct opposite act of kindness in the place of miseries, which are present in our life. Supposing, a person remains unmarried for a long period of time, even after attaining a marriageable age, he would certainly get married very soon and experience happiness in life, if he conducts a free marriage for a poor couple and worships the Holy feet of God.
SHANTHI REMEDIES-SECOND PATH
According to the second path, if a person constructs a temple, establishes a Deity and thus feeds men with thoughts of righteousness, he can remove the evil effects of his sins committed in his past births. For example, if a person remains unmarried due to Sarbathosha (snake thosha), which presents hurdles for attaining a marital status, he can construct a temple for "Harichandra", performing a purifying ceremony (for the temple) to remove the impact of the evil deeds of his past life on him. By adopting the remedial measures stated above he will certainly get married, and experience pleasure. The second path, which induces others to follow the path of righteousness and thereby helps them to remove the effects of their evil deeds of their past birth is said to be a very great one. Shanthi Kandams instructs a person to atone for the sins committed in his past births and reveals through it's Divine secret paths, ways to increase the number of good deeds in order to experience gr eat changes in his life. Therefore, if a person pays heed to the g olden words of the Guru and abides by the ways prescribed by the Shanthi ghandham, he is sure to experience great changes in his life and he will possess thoughts of righteousness which in turn would prevent him from doing evil deeds in future.
SHANTHI REMEDIES-THIRD PATH
According to the third path the evil effects of sins (of the past births) can be reduced by degrees through sincere utterance of the sacred original mantrasto God and by allowing thoughts of righteousness to grow in us people with false faith who pretend to have devotion to God will derive bad results instead of good results if they follow this path. By adopting the remedial measures certain soul get the desired effect within a few days, whereas it takes months or even years for other souls to get the desired effect. The power of the evil deed done in the past the sense of adoration for the remedy, and the kind of life one leads after the performance of the remedy (parikara) are the factors that determine the span of time taken for the desired effect to come to them. Only those who are destined to follow and perform the prescribed remedial measures with the guidance of the Guru can derive benefits. Others, who do not have the determination to do them, will neither come to understand the sins of the past births nor will they be able to remove the impact of by adapting remedial measures. Remedial measures adopted with the guidance given by us in the prescribed manner will certainly bring about benefits in life.

Procedure to go for Nadi astrology
The Nadi Astrologer is generally busy and one has to take an appointment with him in advance. When one goes there on the appointed day he checks his diary and takes the three impressions of the right thumb for males and the left thumb for females on a paper giving a serial order number and asks you to wait till he calls you. Then he goes inside his library room where the palm leaves are kept which is not accessible to others. After an hour or so, sometimes quicker, he comes back with an old palm leaf bundle called index leaves. After making himself comfortable he carefully unwinds the long string which keeps the bundle in tact. He tells you to answer yes or no to his questions. With great devotion he takes the first palm leaf and starts reading on one side.
The reading style is of funny accent in a poetic way, not understandable to even Tamils. After reading one or two lines or even less sometimes he asks you some questions and you have to answer yes or no only. If you say 'No' he proceeds to the other side of leaf or next leaf and continues his questions. The questions are generally one or two at a time, such as whether your name is after some God / Goddess contains 3 or 4 or so letters or so, starts, ends with a particular letter in a Varga (series) of the Hindu alphabets, Similarly about the names of parents and wife/husband whether anyone of them or both are alive or dead, number of elder and younger brothers and sisters, number of children number of uncles, type of profession, whether you are born in rainy season / summer etc. whether you are born in movable / fixed/ dual Moon and lagna rasis, whether you are born in a particular Moon Birth star whether you are born in a particular day in a particular year whether your age is so and so etc.
He says that he does not know what questions to ask unless he scans the leaves and that is why they generally insist the concerned person or a person who knows every detail about the persons consulted, should be present to answer the questions correctly, otherwise they say the readings will go wrong. They do not bother much if you cannot answer questions about birth date, month age, Moon rasi and star, lagna and they seem to bother more about matching of your name names of parents and wife/husband. If he gets 'No' answers to all the leaves of the first bundle when he goes back into his library and brings another bundle.
This process continues for an hour or so generally covering up to bundles each consisting about 50 leaves or sometimes quickly even in the first bundle till he and your are satisfied and the answers to all the questions in a particular leaf are 'yes' only, concerning names, parents, wife /husband, co-born profession etc. Then he goes inside and brings another particular bundle and reads in poetic style your actual birth date, month and year, the astrological birth chart with position of planets sometimes with lagna also exact names of yourself, parents, wife/ husband, co-born, education, profession and gist of future predictions in a broad way and this is called General Kandam (chapter) of first bhava. You can verify the chart given if you know your birth chart he writes the concerned verses from the leaf in a notebook. Then he records the same in an audio tape with translation into common understandable Tamil or some other languages with the help of a translator if necessary. He generally charges a minimum amount for this General Kandam Then he asks you whether you want more details about any particular aspect of your life such as marriage, profession, etc and if so he picks up corresponding bundle and charges a similar amount extra for each aspect which he calls a separate kandam or chapter. Some chapters give details about previous birth, remedial measures etc.
At the end he hands over the notebook and audio tape to you with devotion and takes money generally at the place where the photos of Gods /Goddesses are.

Nadi Sastra
It is presumed that the Sapta Rishis (Seven Sages) had written the life patterns of each person on palm leaves along with their types of names by their Yogic Powers. (It seems that these Nadis were originally written on animal skins and some leaves and later they were copied on palm leaves. They are preserved by applying oil extracted from peacock's blood. )
These unique leaves were kept in the Saraswati Mahal' library of Tanjore city of Tamilnadu State in India. Later during the British Rule the British were very keen to acquire these types of ancient leaves dealing with herbal cure, alchemy, fortune-telling etc; but left some of the astrological leaves to their loyalists. Some were put to auction also. People belonging to a particular sect called Valluvar community who specialized in astrology bought these leaves. Some of these were acquired by the astrology families in Vaitheeswarankoil about 60 years ago from Thanjavur Saraswati Mahal Library.
The leaves were found lying idle in Vaitheeswarankoil by about the 13th century, the forefathers who found them realized their values and copied the contents on palm leaves and made exact replicas. These leaves have been handed down over generations to make predictions. They earned their livelihood through Nadi Astrology. It is a hereditary profession for them. They got trained from their elders to do Nadi reading. What is written on the leaves is read and explained by them. The language is poetic and the script is also different. It is the same as in the ancient temples.
Some of the Nadis are available in the Oriental Manuscripts Library at Chennai, India though in mutilated condition and the SaptaRishiNadi was published in Tamil in six volumes, lagna wise .
The Sanskrit texts were translated and written on palmyra or palm leaves in old archaic Tamil language.
There were some nadigranthas translated into another South Indian language like Telugu language. Marata King Sarabhoji and Chola Kings patronized this form of astrology and translations.
It is stated that Sage Agasthya had written it in Tamil. They have a certain amount of collection of leaves. For each thumb print there will be 6 granthas. In each grantha there will be 108 sizes and 12 parts according to Siva Nadi and 50 sizes in Agastyanadi that means for one thumbprint many stories of a person can be read. In Siva Nadi more details are given as discussion between Lord Siva and Parvati than in Agastya Nadi .

History of Nadi astrology
The source point of Nadi leaves can be traced back to approximately more then 2000 years. It is said that the Seven Maharishis (sages) Agasthya, Kausika, Vyasa, BoharBrigu,Vasishtha and Valmiki had predicted and then written life of each individual on leaves of a palm tree by their spiritual powers. These Nadi leaves were initially stored in the premises Tanjore Saraswati Mahal of Tamilnadu State in India. The British rulers later showed interest in the Nadi leaves concerned with herbs and medicine, future prediction etc; but ironically left most of the Nadi prediction leaves to their loyal people. Some leaves get destroyed and some very auctioned during the British rule. Some Nadi leaves were anyhow possessed by the families of astrologers in Vaitheeswarankoil from Tanjore Saraswati Mahal Library. At about 13th century these leaves were rediscovered by the forefathers which were lying unclaimed in Vaitheeswarankoil and realized their tremendous value and created the copies of the predictions on the palm leafs and created them their exact duplicates. Then these Nadi leaves were passed down from generation to generation make predictions, astrologers earn their lively hood from them. It has become profession which was provided by their ancestors to them, the son got trained by his father and the father by his father to make Nadi predictions. The prediction written on the leaf is in ancient Tamil in form of poems, same as language used in ancient temple of Tamilnadu.
